How to manually update Surface Pro firmware

Keeping your Surface Pro device up-to-date is crucial to ensure optimal performance, security, and compatibility. While Microsoft often provides automatic updates via Windows Updates, there might be instances where you need to manually update your Surface Pro device’s firmware due to security issues or malfunction. In this post, I’ll demonstrate the process of manually updating Surface Pro firmware to make sure your Surface is performing its best.

Prepare your Surface Pro before updating

Before you begin the firmware update process, make sure that:

  • Surface Pro is plugged into an outlet, and it’s charged to at least 40% and maintain plugged in.
  • Attach Surface Type Cover or Surface Dock (if you have one) so it can get the latest updates too.
  • Open the Surface app and head to “Device information” to find your Surface model and BIOS Version/Date, OS build, etc.

Download the firmware from official Microsoft support website

1.Access the Microsoft support website: Download drivers and firmware for Surface – Microsoft Support > click “Manually update Surface drivers and firmware (Advanced)” > select your Surface model.

2.Click the link for the exact Surface model you possess. (In my case, go with Surface Pro 9 Intel)

3.On the redirected page > click download button to download the firmware. Note, the default firmware is intended for Windows 11, however there is an Archive Section provided with a firmware for Windows 10.

4.During the firmware downloading period, you can also head to the update history page to view the currently released firmware version in detail.

5.Double-click the firmware package once you’ve downloaded on your device.

6.Click Next to start the installation.

7.Accept the EULA and hit Next.

8.Keep the default installation path.

9.Click the Install button make if prompt UAC window click Yes.

10.Waiting for the progress to be complete, in my case it only takes less than 1 minute.

11.Click the Finish button > it will prompt for a restart > click Yes to restart.

12.After your Surface device reboot it will start to update the firmware. (In my case, it takes 2-3 minutes to completed)

13.When the process is completed, it will boot into the desktop environment > then launch the Surface app > head to Device Information to check the BIOS version to verify.

At this stage, your device is successfully updated with latest firmware no other action required. Remember that regular firmware updates are essential for maintaining the longevity and performance of your Surface device. And sometime it also brings security fixes with feature enhancements.
